I would like to nominate Cassandra and Julie as making an outstanding contribution to the Arts in Colchester by founding the town’s first contemporary youth choir, Cords. The choir was established in February 2004 to provide a valuable opportunity for some of Colchester’s most talented young signers. It aims to develop their vocal ability, harmony and ensemble skills, enabling the children to work as a team with other talented youngsters and gain performance experience whilst singing contemporary music. Cords now has 30 members aged 8-16 and performs a wide repertoire from Red Hot Chilli Peppers to Disney! A high standard is expected and the choir is sounding better every term. All the children are growing in confidence and are showing improved use in and control of their voices. Cassandra and Julie are talented, young teachers (both signers themselves) who have worked tirelessly, with no funding, to set up and promote this project. It has been a challenge and a huge learning experience for them, coping not just with the teaching, conducting and accompanying, but also the management and administration involved in organising an on-going concert programme. They would like to see the choir grow to 80 members and become a leading light in the Colchester arts scene. An award would recognise the girls’ hard work and achievement and help put Cords ‘on the map’ encouraging, I would hope, both new children to join and organisations in Colchester to book the group to perform at their local events. |
